Hi, my name is Lisa, I am a qualified Counsellor and achieved Level 2 in Counselling Children and Young People, Level 3 Counselling and Psychotherapy and Level 5 advanced diploma in Counselling practice in 2013
After gaining my counselling qualification, I worked in a main stream primary school as a learning mentor, and gained experience working with children with a wide range of social and emotional needs, on an individual basis and group work. I completed ELSA training which has given me extra skills to use, including puppetry, sand therapy and play therapy. All of this is adaptable to different ages and can be moulded to suit interests and emotional stages.
Previous to this, I had completed a course in play therapy, so found this training to be a useful progression.
I have also worked as a school counsellor in an EMSH School and successfully ran Nurturing programmes within schools.
I have 11 year’s experience of fostering and adoption, I have personally adopted and supported children through this process. During my time as a foster carer I have looked after children, some short term, some long term ranging from 4 -17 years, with varying issues. This has given me a broad knowledge base and a good understanding of the many issues these young people face on a daily basis. I have worked with children who have different attachment styles, developmental delay, special needs, anger issues, educational struggles, Special Educational Needs, self-esteem/self-image problems and anxiety
My extensive work with children and young people has enabled me to develop a good working knowledge of safeguarding, legislation and child protection. Alongside this, I have formed good working relationships with relevant professionals including other foster carers, local learning mentors/school counsellors, social care, CAMHS/Consult and The Virtual Schools.
I am also a facilitator for Family Links, I have undertaken training and have delivered the nurture programme. I have attended many courses such as Life story work, challenging behaviour, abuse awareness, safe guarding children, autism, attachment and trauma awareness (six week course), play therapy, speech and language therapy and the issues of LAC children, including the ‘No worries’ programme, I am paediatric first aid trained, and I have also been involved with the virtual schools programme. I am the co-chair and founder of North Somerset foster carers association (NSFCA)
